Debt Consolidation Loans: When They Save Money
A debt consolidation loan replaces several high-rate balances with one fixed-rate instalment loan. It saves money only when the new APR, including the origination fee, is meaningfully lower than the weighted average rate you pay now — and only when the cleared cards are not run up again.

Average rate on a 24-month personal loan at commercial banks, from the Federal Reserve's G.19 release. Online lenders and credit unions price around this benchmark rather than at it.
Run the break-even before you apply
List every balance with its APR and minimum payment. Calculate the weighted average rate: multiply each balance by its rate, add them, divide by the total balance. That figure is what the new loan's APR must beat.
Then compare total interest, not monthly payment. A loan that halves your payment by doubling the term can cost more overall even at a lower rate. The right consolidation keeps the payment close to what you already pay and shortens the payoff date.
What it does to your credit score
In the first month you take a hard inquiry and a new account, which usually costs a few points. Then revolving utilisation collapses as the cards hit zero, and utilisation is the second-largest scoring factor — most borrowers see a net increase within two or three statement cycles.
Keep the paid-off cards open with no balance. Closing them removes the available credit that just improved your utilisation, undoing the benefit.
The behaviour that decides the outcome
Consolidation fails in a predictable way: the cards are cleared, the relief is real, and within a year the balances are back alongside the loan payment. The fix is mechanical, not motivational.
- Have the lender pay creditors directly where possible, so the cash never lands in your account.
- Remove the cleared cards from your wallet and from stored checkout profiles.
- Build a small starter emergency fund first, so the next unexpected cost does not go back on plastic.
- Set the loan payment on autopay the day after payday.
Alternatives worth comparing
A 0% balance transfer beats a consolidation loan when the balance can be cleared inside the promotional window, because the only cost is the transfer fee. Above that horizon, the fixed loan is usually better.
A nonprofit credit counselling debt management plan is worth a call if payments are already unaffordable: agencies negotiate reduced rates with card issuers and consolidate payments without new borrowing. Avoid for-profit debt settlement, which damages credit and can create taxable forgiven debt.

What this result is based on
This tool uses only the figures you enter and standard arithmetic. No external dataset feeds the result, so there is nothing to cite beyond the formula shown on the page.
This debt payoff calculator turns a loan amount, an interest rate and a term into the numbers that actually decide affordability: the monthly payment, the total interest and the date the balance hits zero.
Every figure updates instantly, so you can test a shorter term or a slightly better rate before you ever speak to a lender.
