How to Dispute Credit Report Errors and Win

Credit report errors are common, and the Fair Credit Reporting Act gives you a free, enforceable right to have them investigated. A dispute succeeds when it is specific, documented and directed at both the credit bureau and the company that supplied the information.

Get all three reports first

Equifax, Experian and TransUnion hold separate files, and an error on one often does not appear on the others. Pull all three from the official free annual report service before disputing anything, so you know exactly where each error sits.

Read each account line for the details that actually change outcomes: the balance, the credit limit, the account status, the date of first delinquency, and whether an account is yours at all.

Write a dispute that gets investigated

Identify the specific item, state precisely what is wrong, say what the correct information is, and attach evidence — a payment record, a settlement letter, a bank statement, a police report for identity theft.

Send it to the bureau and, separately, to the furnisher (the lender or collection agency). Disputing with the furnisher directly triggers its own investigation duty and often resolves faster. Keep copies and send anything material by certified mail.

What the bureaus must do

The FCRA sets out clear obligations with deadlines.

  • Investigate within 30 days, extended to 45 if you supply additional information mid-investigation.
  • Forward all relevant documentation you provide to the furnisher.
  • Delete or correct anything that cannot be verified.
  • Give you a free copy of the updated report when a change is made.
  • Notify the other bureaus of a deletion at your request.

When the dispute is rejected

If an entry is verified but you know it is wrong, escalate. Request the method of verification the bureau used, send a second dispute with stronger documentation, and file a complaint with the CFPB, which routes it to the company and requires a response.

You can also add a 100-word consumer statement to your file. It carries little weight with automated scoring but can matter in manual underwriting. For persistent, damaging inaccuracies, the FCRA provides a private right of action, and consumer law attorneys frequently take these cases on contingency.
