Best Balance Transfer Credit Cards: 0% APR Explained
A balance transfer moves high-interest credit card debt onto a card charging 0% for a promotional period, usually 12 to 21 months. It is one of the few genuinely powerful debt tools available, but only if you treat the promotional window as a deadline and divide the balance by the number of months you have.

Average APR on all US credit card accounts, from the Federal Reserve's G.19 consumer credit release. Carrying a balance at this rate wipes out any realistic rewards return within weeks.
What a balance transfer actually costs
Almost every transfer charges a fee of 3% to 5% of the amount moved, added to the new balance immediately. On $8,000 that is $240 to $400. Compare it against the interest you would otherwise pay: at 20% APR, $8,000 accrues well over $1,300 in a year, so the fee is usually a bargain.
The 0% rate applies to the transferred balance for the promotional period only. Anything left when the promo ends starts accruing at the card's regular APR, which is often as high as the debt you escaped.
The payoff plan that makes it work
Divide the transferred balance plus the fee by the number of promotional months, and set that as a fixed automatic payment on day one. On a $6,000 transfer with a 3% fee over 18 months, that is $343 a month, and the debt is gone with zero interest paid.
The minimum payment will be far lower than that figure. Paying the minimum through a 0% window is how people arrive at month 19 with most of the balance intact and a high-rate card.
Rules that catch people out
Balance transfer offers come with conditions that are easy to miss and expensive to break.
- You usually cannot transfer a balance between two cards from the same issuer.
- The transfer must normally be requested within 60-120 days of opening the account to get the promotional rate.
- Your approved credit limit may be lower than the balance you wanted to move.
- New purchases may not share the 0% rate, and payments are applied to the highest-rate balance last on some cards.
- A late payment can void the promotional rate entirely under the card agreement.
When a personal loan beats a transfer
A balance transfer wins when you can realistically clear the debt inside the promotional window. Beyond that, a fixed-rate personal loan is usually the better structure: the rate is locked, the term can run three to five years, and the fixed instalment forces amortisation instead of relying on discipline.
The other advantage is behavioural. Consolidating into a loan closes the balance on a revolving line, while a transfer leaves the old card open and available to be run up again — the most common way people end up with two balances instead of one.

Interest is charged on the balance every month, so every extra dollar shortens the term twice: once directly, once through the interest it avoids.
This credit card payoff calculator turns a loan amount, an interest rate and a term into the numbers that actually decide affordability: the monthly payment, the total interest and the date the balance hits zero.
Every figure updates instantly, so you can test a shorter term or a slightly better rate before you ever speak to a lender.
