Car Loans With Bad Credit: How to Borrow Safely
Subprime auto lending is the part of consumer credit where a bad decision is hardest to reverse, because you need the car to keep the job that pays for the car. Financing is widely available below a 600 credit score, but the pricing, the add-ons and the repossession terms vary enormously between a credit union and a buy-here-pay-here lot.

Average rate on a 60-month new-car loan at commercial banks, from the Federal Reserve's G.19 release. Captive finance arms and credit unions price around this level, sometimes far below it during manufacturer promotions.
Start with a credit union, not a lot
Credit unions underwrite manually and cap rates for members, which makes them the single best starting point for a weak credit file. Many run explicit second-chance auto programmes with counselling attached.
Community banks and some online lenders also serve this tier at real rates. The point is to arrive at the dealership with an approval in hand, so the finance office is competing rather than dictating.
Buy-here-pay-here and what it costs
Buy-here-pay-here dealers finance in house, rarely report positive payment history to the bureaus, and often price the vehicle far above market before adding a very high rate. Some install starter-interrupt or GPS devices and repossess quickly on a single missed payment.
If it is genuinely the only option, insist on knowing the cash price, the APR and the total of payments separately, confirm whether payments are reported to the credit bureaus, and read the default and repossession clauses before signing.
Structure the deal to protect yourself
The structure matters more than the badge on the car.
- Buy a cheaper, reliable used car and finance the smallest amount possible.
- Put down as much as you can to reduce the loan-to-value ratio and the rate.
- Keep the term at 48 months or less so you build equity quickly.
- Decline dealer add-ons — extended warranties, paint protection, gap policies priced above a credit union's.
- Budget insurance before you buy: subprime borrowers often face higher premiums, and it can exceed the payment.
Plan the refinance from day one
Treat a subprime auto loan as temporary financing. Twelve months of on-time payments plus repairs to revolving utilisation frequently move a score enough to refinance into a far cheaper loan.
Set a calendar reminder for month ten, check your score, and prequalify with two credit unions. Cutting a high subprime rate roughly in half on a remaining balance is usually worth more than any negotiation at the point of purchase.
