Who has to take an RMD
Traditional IRA, SEP and SIMPLE IRA holders from age 73.
401(k), 403(b) and 457(b) holders, unless still working for that employer.
Inherited accounts, under separate beneficiary rules.
Roth IRAs are exempt during the original owner's lifetime.
What happens if you miss it
The penalty for missing an RMD is 25% of the shortfall, cut to 10% if you correct it promptly. Most custodians can automate the withdrawal so the deadline never sneaks up on you.

RMD = prior-year 31 December balance ÷ IRS Uniform Lifetime Table factor for your age.
